What we do

  1. Report and encourage the continued development of individualised services for People with Learning Disabilities.
  2. Encourage non building based projects/services
  3. To support the development of ‘Changes Places’ toilet facilities across Brighton & Hove.
   

Travel:
  1. Encourage the use of mainstream transport options for people with learning disabilities.
  2. Support the travel buddy scheme and travel training across Brighton & Hove, using a variety of public transport
  3. To influence Brighton & Hove’s Transport Plan
Leisure:

  1. To encourage and support the development and use of mainstream leisure and sports facilities for people with learning disabilities.
  2. To support the use and development of the ‘Accessible City Guide’ for people with learning disabilities.
  3. To support the Special Olympics Brighton & Hove Sports Club
Adult Learning:

  1. To encourage the use of mainstream adult learning facilities and courses for people with learning disabilities.
  2. To work with City College and other training providers in developing the range of options available for people with learning disabilities.
Community Safety & Fighting Hate Crime:

  1. In conjunction with the Community Safety Team to scope the prevalence of hate crime against people with learning disabilities.
  2. In conjunction with the Community Safety Team to develop strategies around community safety initiatives to support people accessing the local community.
  3. In conjunction with the Community Safety Team to promote greater understanding of Hate Crime against people with learning disabilities amongst police, courts, health & social care agencies and local neighbourhoods.
  4. To develop accessible information.
  5. In conjunction with the Community Safety Team to develop ways that people can report hate crime and ensure we have reliable data that is analysed on a regular basis and strategies are developed around crime reduction
  6. To develop strategies to ensure people with learning disabilities are supported as victims, witnesses and survivors.

LD Together

The Learning Disability Together Network aims to bring together organisations, people, and communities from all sectors and backgrounds to share best practice, ideas and information in order to develop and support greater choice, control, access and opportunities for people with learning disabilities living in Brighton & Hove.

Learning Disability Together Network meeting:
Wednesday 6 July 2011
1:00 to 4:00 at St Georges Community Centre Hall, St George's Church, St George's Road, Brighton, BN2 1ED

We are pleased to be joined at the event by St John’s College, who will lead a session around issues relating to transitions for young people with a learning disability. Grace Eyre will be leading a session around peer-to-peer. There will also be an update from Libby at the CVSF regarding the website and a short performance piece by Jimmy; an ex service user from Arden House.

Many thanks to St John’s College for providing a meeting space and what will no doubt be a splendid lunch, so do arrive promptly to get your fill!

The timetable for the event is as follows:
1.00-1.45pm    Lunch and informal networking
1.45-2pm         Neil Holmes,Care Co-ops: Introduction, with Libby from the CVSF giving an update regarding the website
2.00-2.35pm    St John's College: Session which focuses on issues relating to transitions for young people with a learning disability
2.35-2.45pm    Short Performance: Jimmy, an ex service user from Arden House
2.45-3.00pm    Break
3.00-3.30pm    Grace Eyre: Peer-to-peer for people with a learning disability
3.30-4.00pm    Feedback for the next event and informal networking

Shut Up and Listen

Shut up and Listen is the only place on the radio to hear music made by artists with a learning disability.  The show is run by people with learning disabilities.  They make a new show every month, and it is repeated every week.

If you live in Brighton you can hear the show on Radio Reverb 97.2 FM at 8pm every Thursday.  Or, you can go to our website www.shutupandlisten.org.uk and click on 'Radio' to download the shows.
